On August 23 John Jenkins reported that he delivered shoes to twenty-one soldiers, including John Swift, who would later accompany him to New York State to survey the Phelps and Gorham Purchase.

Up until this point, the Sullivan and Clinton armies had met limited resistance. But at Newtown, now Elmira, New York, scouts reported that a large Iroquois and British force was prepared to meet Sullivan’s army. On August 29, Sullivan began his attack on Newtown. The British and the Haudenosaunee fought bravely but were overpowered by the much greater Continental force. As was their choice when involved in a losing battle, the Iroquois began to leave, signaling their intent to their comrades with a peculiar yell used for that purpose. After six hours, the conflict was over. Jenkins wrote in his diary:

Aug. 29th [Jenkins]: Soon after our cannon began to play upon them, they ran off and left their breastworks, in the most precipitous manner, leaving their packs, blankets, tomahawks, spears, etc. behind them. At the same time we took possession of the enemy’s ground and fortifications.
